How to Incorporate System Archetypes into Water Conflicts Analysis: Application in Euphrates, Nile, Zambezi, and Lake Kivu Transboundary Basins
This paper introduces and fleshes out a systemic method designed to develop a holistic understanding of states’ behavior in transboundary water conflict and cooperation. Such an approach leverages causality analysis to capture the deep structural characteristics that shape the hydropolitics dynamics and may lead to the evolution of destructive behaviors with severe consequences. The paper does so by using the concepts of the system archetype.

How can we solve the global water crisis?
- Water-related crises around the world show that current systems of water management are unsuited for a world altered by global warming.
- Water-use restrictions, power cuts and other stopgap measures are no longer fit for purpose.
- The task now is to understand the links between water, climate change and biodiversity loss, and to properly govern water as a global common good.
- The world needs to clearly define its plans, a
Remote sensing technology helps close the transboundary water data gap in Africa
With 90 percent of fresh water in Africa found within 63 international river basin catchments crossing multiple borders, water resource management on the continent must be an inherently international and cooperative endeavor. Credible and consistent data on the quantity and quality of water is vital in ensuring the equitable and efficient management, distribution, and usage of transboundary water – which is imperative in addressing major regional development challenges as well as contributing to a reduction in conflict and displacement.
Shifts in regional water availability due to global tree restoration
Abstract
Tree restoration is an effective way to store atmospheric carbon and mitigate climate change. However, large-scale tree-cover expansion has long been known to increase evaporation, leading to reduced local water availability and streamflow. More recent studies suggest that increased precipitation, through enhanced atmospheric moisture recycling, can offset this effect.
