We are pleased to share our research article entitled

Global Water Challenges in Sub-Saharan Africa and how to strengthen science-policy dialogues on transboundary governance and cooperation” by Anghileri et al., 2024.

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0301479724014038

This paper reviews current water-related issues in nine Sub-Saharan African transboundary basins, drawing on existing literature and strategic development documents. The basins covered are the Senegal and Niger (West Africa), Lakes Victoria, Chad, and Tanganyika (Central Africa), and the Okavango, Orange, Limpopo, and Zambezi (Southern Africa). This document, along with its associated technical reports hereafter, serves as a foundation for identifying potential actions and investment programs within these basins

It also discusses best practices to promote cooperation among riparian countries towards common policy agendas. We highlight the gaps between the priorities identified by the scientific community and the African riparian countries on how to tackle  hydro-climatic change and improve food and energy security, human and environmental health.

The paper follows from the discussions of the UN Water Conference on how to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal 6 (on water and sanitation) and builds on the activities that the WEFE4Dev research group at the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission has conducted in collaboration with African River Basin Organisations and Centres of Excellence in Water Sciences.

We hope that you will enjoy reading the paper!

Feel free to browse the interactive maps below and, if you are interested in a particular transboundary basin, please let us know and we will be happy to share more details with you.
