PCCP and UNESCO-IHE are to organize short courses on "Negotiation and Mediation for Water Conflict Management" in 2011. The 2011 courses will take place in The Hague and Delft, The Netherlands, from 7 to 25 February and from 28 February to 18 March 2011.
These courses are part of a joint MSc in Water Management – specialization Water Conflict Management, LLM in Water Governance and Conflict Resolution. Regularly organized by PCCP and UNESCO-IHE, they can also be followed by external candidates who are interested in a short, effective and dynamic training in water and conflict management.
The first short course on "Negotiation and Mediation for Water Conflict Management I", to be held from 7 to 25 February 2011 (deadline for application 07 January 2011), will introduce the basic concepts of negotiation processes, determinants of conflict behavior, conflict situations and handling modes as well as methods of effective negotiation; assessments of personal negotiating styles; it will also emphasize the importance of communication. The role of the negotiator, and the qualities and responsibilities of a good negotiator will be highlighted.
The second course on "Negotiation and Mediation for Water Conflict Management II" to be held from 28 February to 18 March 2011 (deadline for application 28 January 2011), will recap the basic concepts of negotiation. It will also introduce advanced processes that can be used in the prevention, the anticipation or the resolution of conflicts in a transboundary water setting. It will focus on concepts that can be used in the management of multi-party decision making processes The role of the negotiator, the facilitator, the mediator, and the qualities and responsibilities of such players will be highlighted.
The first course is not a prerequisite for the second short course. Depending on their preference, participants can follow only one or both courses. Both courses are only offered in English.
