BACKGROUND AND OUTLINE
Southern Africa is currently on a trajectory of rapid social and economic development. Population growth,
urbanisation, industrial development and food security are some of the issues governments are grappling
with at the local, regional and international levels. Water is central to the latter, and its availability, quality
and accessibility to stakeholders and the natural environment are amongst the complex challenges that
need to be addressed.
