Science and Technology

On September 02, CTA launched an e-consultation on “Science, Indigenous Knowledge and Innovation: Implications for ACP Agriculture” in preparation for the 9th meeting of the Advisory Committee (AC) on Science and Technology (S&T) for ACP Agricultural and Rural Development.

AC members and invited speakers will deliberate on four main issues:

  1. KEY CONCEPTS: Highlighting the vivid debate around the terminology ‘indigenous knowledge’ as well as the meaning of the words;
  2. EXPERIENCE AND POTENTIAL: Exploring the value to be gained by a systematic linking of indigenous knowledge, science and innovation for advancing ACP agriculture;
  3. ETHICAL ISSUES: Considering that many of the references to indigenous knowledge refer to exploitation, theft and absence of recognition of property rights. Is this just another distraction from furthering the science agenda;
  4. POLICIES: One of the outcomes will be recommendations for policies at organizational, national, regional, ACP or international level to add value to the linkage between science and indigenous knowledge for spurring ACP agricultural innovation and economic development.

The e-consultation will last for 10 weeks. The outcomes will be presented at the Advisory Committee meeting in Pretoria, South Africa during the CTA Week, from 22-26 November 2010.
