Access to safe water, improved sanitation, and hygiene education are essential for human development. Although access to water has increased dramatically (globally we met the Millennium Development Goal for water in 2010) progress on sanitation lags far behind. Annually millions of children still die from preventable water-borne illness that could be eliminated through improved water, sanitation, and regular practice of basic hygiene such as hand washing with soap.

Organized by the Global Water Partnership (GWP) Central and South America, the Latin American Water Education and Training Network (LA-WETNet), the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and universities from Chile, Colombia and Peru, the workshop aims to train professionals from environment and foreign ministries, members of parliament, and national water management institutions in themes linked to transboundary waters.

For 2014, the Global Water Summit returns to Paris, France - Europe’s long-established centre of trade and culture. The theme is growth and will focus on water's key role in economic recovery and its development as we move towards 2050.

The Africa Groundwater Network (AGW-Net) successfully held a regional course on “Groundwater Management within IWRM in the Basin River context” in Bamako, Mali in September this year. With support from Cap-Net and the Regional Coordination of Niger Basin Water Users (CRU-BN), a second round of the course will now take place in Cotonou, Benin from the 9th to 13th December.

The Platform for International Water Law of the Faculty of Law of the University of Geneva and the UNECE Secretariat of the Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes have the pleasure to invite you to the conference on the topic:

Public Participation and Water Resources Management:
Where do We Stand in International Law?

The cases of the Niger, Senegal, Danube, Rhone river basin will be tackled

One way in which poor communities are marginalized is lack of access- to public services, markets and employment opportunities- due to a lack of good roads. Many a time, the problem is the frequent damage to existing roads (rather than absence of roads).

A large part of the damage is water-related. (In Ethiopia, for example, runoff causes 35% of all road damage). At the same time, roads designed with disregard to local hydrology/water use are known to wreak havoc on agriculture and water security in communities they pass through.

The theme of  this year is on Energy and Water.
