Technological innovation and adaptation are integral to many of the water-saving measures, service extensions and sanitation system improvements that are urgently required in developing countries. Technical issues largely determine the costs of a given water-related project, and thus choosing the right technology is of paramount importance for the successful completion and sustainability of the project.
This training course will complement the Water Project Toolkit with Technological principles that are laid throughout the document by:
- Introducing why WS&S (Water supply and sanitation) services are of utmost importance for human development
- Supporting the Water Project Toolkit with technical and concrete examples.
- Presenting the main reasons why many WS&S projects can have limited impacts.
- Illustrating the main things to consider when choosing a technology
- Presenting some of the most common water supply and sanitation technologies in line with the Toolkit’s recommendations: “the choice should be governed by considerations of its efficiency, appropriateness, cost and suitability for local conditions” (EC, 2011:49).
On the basis of these recommendations, non-exhaustive lists of technologies for sanitation and a list of technologies for water supply will therefore be summarised in tables according to:
Costs, Scale (small scale or large scale projects), Local expertise and local knowledge (including local manufacture and replication of technology), Capacity for operation and maintenance, Training and information resources.
By the end of this course you will:
- Have a concise overview of potential water supply and sanitation technologies,
- Understand why WS&S often fail and what should be considered when choosing an appropriate technology,
- Understand why WS&S services are of utmost importance for human development.
