The Zambezi River Basin
This preliminary report, developed by the European Union (DG INTPA and JRC) in collaboration with African partners examines the critical role of water security in achieving Africa’s long-term growth targets under Agenda 2063. Utilizing a combination of scientific literature, "grey" programming data, and expert consultation, the study identifies critical Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) priorities across five thematic areas: food security, flow regime management, increasing water demand, water quality and health, and the water-energy nexus. Key findings highlight significant knowledge gaps in groundwater monitoring and the methodologies used in regional planning. The report emphasizes the need for an open, shared data infrastructure and harmonized cross-sectoral policies to mitigate competition between riparian states and enhance climate resilience through evidence-based decision-making
