PROGRAMME DE L’ATELIER DE LANCEMENT ET DE PLANIFICATION PLURIANNUELLE DES ACTIVITES DU PROJET MEKROU DU 18 AU 20 MARS 2014

Ouagadougou, Hôtel Palm Beach

  • The overall objective of the EU through this project is to support Economic Green Growth and Poverty Reduction in African countries (Burkina Faso, Benin and Niger), ensuring continued water to developing areas. In African developing countries, climate variability is high, water-related investments are relatively limited, and there is a strong correlation between rainfall variability and GDP performance. Where economic performance is closely linked to rainfall and runoff, growth becomes hostage to hydrology. Drought in sub-Saharan Africa is a dominant climate risk. It destroys economic livelihoods and farmers’ food sources and has a major negative effect on GDP growth in one-third of the countries. Underdevelopment of water resources leads to under use of economic potential and to an adaptation deficit, that is, an inability to adequately manage existing climate risks and hydrological variability. This lack of investment has not been only in assets and infrastructure but also in institutional capacity to develop policies, plans and systems to improve the integrated management of water resources at transboundary level. Therefore, the challenge for the government and water managers is to balance development with sustainability, to find ways to develop and manage water resources with the appropriate responses to the requirements of the basin.
  • The specific objectives are:

    1. Establishment of the Cooperation Framework on Water for Growth long term planning in the Mekrou transboundary basin

    2. Development of an Integrated Water Resource Strategy for green growth in the Mekrou River basin (food security, appropriate urban and rural development and environmental conservation to meet challenges arising from climate change) and water sector investment promotion.
